Legendary Makeup Artist Kevyn Aucoin - must see documentary on Netflix

A must see! Recently released on Netflix is a documentary on legendary makeup artist – Kevyn Aucoin. What I admire enormously is he was completely self taught – his love of Makeup started at an early age – making up his sisters and photographing his work with a Polaroid camera.

He moved to New York and was applying makeup for free on test models to build his portfolio when he was discovered by Vogue. From there he was working on the most beautiful faces in the industry – models so beautiful and for the first time in fashion history, had become celebrities in their own right – dubbed ‘Super Models’ – Kevyn was riding the same wave – now being paid $85,000 for a four day shoot! 

I love his philosophy – “to empower a woman by using makeup to reveal her natural beauty, not to cover her up with layers of product” – (my motto also) 

Kevyn wasn’t without his own personal struggles and demons, his rise to the top is amazing given he was born in the southern states of the US in a town where homosexuality was considered illegal and a massive sin (he was gay) and add to that a love of applying makeup – his life was not easy.

I highly recommend watching this documentary if you can – not only to see the makeup and the original supermodels in their prime, but also what can be achieved – without any certificates (they are not worth the paper they are written on – your talent and portfolio is the only thing that matters) and how adversity can be overcome if you’re willing to keep standing back up and moving forward.
