Ellen McIntosh - Fundamentals Makeup Course

Jo clearly has a lot of experience and skill with make up. She taught me new techniques that were so easy and gave such a beautiful result. Class size was small and Jo was very attentive of us and was able to give us basically one on one time after her demonstrations. Detailed notes were given to us that were easy to follow. I loved that she sold the brushes and products that she herself uses in her kit that have been curated by her over her years of experience for what works best. This course was invaluable to me and truly inspired me to go out and chase a dream. Will definitely be back soon for the Advanced pro make up course.

A bit over 4 years ago, I flew to Melbourne from Perth to complete the Fundamentals & Advanced makeup courses at Joanna blair makeup academy! I clicked with Jo right away and we got along great, I thoroughly enjoyed the course and since the course - I blossomed! Who knew how far I’d come in a matter of years.

I got home, as well as starting up my own home makeup business, I miraculously scored a 2nd in charge role with Estée Lauder, being in charge at times and filling in for the state makeup artist. This role was the first stepping stone for me. I then was promoted to Manager at another counter and was there for a couple of years, this was the 3rd biggest business in W.A. I was flown over east for managers training, and was given many opportunities during this time!

I then wanted a change and was always drawn to Dior, I was offered a Manager position with Dior. At this time I still was doing many weddings, balls and special occasion makeups from home too!

After bringing up the counter sales by 10% on last years sales, I was asked if I would like to become a Dior Specialist, specialising in either makeup skincare or fragrance. Obviously I chose makeup lol!

My boss told me once you become a specialist, the next step is either state or national roles within the brand. I also will be flown to Melbourne 2020 for training to be given my title. I currently work at the biggest Dior business in W.A, where we have international and national visits from Dior head offices across the world and Australia wide.

This is all after completing my course with Jo :) I truly learn’t so much and I really appreciate her support and comments even to this day on my makeup artistry page.

What amazing 4 weeks I had of learning at this studio. Vic was full of knowledge and real experience it was hard not to be excited every Saturday. The best part was the my had all hairstyling products and tools available so you didn’t need to bring your own. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to get into hairstyling as well as current hairdressers like myself wanting to upskill and gain more confidence.

I recently completed the Advanced Pro Makeup course after completing the Fundamentals course 18 months ago. After years of thinking about joining Jo’s class, I wish I had of done it sooner. Not only is Jo an exceptional makeup artist and artist she is one of the most beautiful people I have ever encountered and a brilliant teacher. I’ve done everything you could possible do at Jo’s school - the Fundamentals & Advanced Makeup courses with Jo herself, the hairstyling course with Amber, as well as a few of the student portfolio shoots that Jo organises - and I would do it all over again.

The makeup course was incredibly well structured and Jo is a brilliant and patient teacher. You don’t just learn how to recreate certain looks, but more so the different techniques behind those looks that you will need in order to apply makeup beautifully regardless of what eye/face shape someone may or may not have.
I particularly enjoyed learning about colour theory when it comes to matching foundation, understanding undertones and how to use and mix your products to receive a perfect match for any skin type & tone.
The Advanced course also dives into makeup history, which is incredibly interesting!
I was already doing a fair bit of makeup before the course but the in-depth understanding & knowledge that Jo gives you does not compare to anything you can learn on Youtube.

The hairstyling course with Amber was another highlight. The small class size allowed time and space for every question to be answered. What I loved was that Amber tailored every single lesson to us and what we wanted to learn depending on the type of work we’re aiming to do. The techniques learned left me feeling confident and very well prepared to create & offer different styles along my makeup service.

Apart from the expertise that you will gain from all the courses that Jo offers at her school, it’s the ongoing support and always personalised advise that sets her apart from anyone else on the market.
It goes way beyond the last day of class, with Jo always being only a message or phone call away when you need advise on business, makeup or anything else.
Her dedication to doing everything she can to help her students succeed & reach their goals is just inspirational.

Where do I begin!? Seriously. Amazing!! From the get go, Jo was so attentive and caring. I was so nervous to take this step and her words of advice really helped. I took that step and enrolled.
Then from the moment you walk into the studio to when you leave, the amount of support, guidance and education you get is UNREAL!!
Vic was by far one of the best tutors I have ever had for anything. Explains everything so well to accommodate everyone's learning style. Visual, verbal and hands on. It covered it all. The styles I got to do, I couldnt believe I did it, and that's all thanks to Vic by simplifying everything step by step. Having a small class as well was fantastic!!!
Even the treatment afterwards that you get from Jo once the course has ended is unbelievable. Follow up texts, everything. ❤️

Where do I even begin to explain my experience at Joanna Blair School of Makeup and Hair - Victoria was beyond knowledgeable and had the answer for any little question asked. Such an amazing experience! I went into this class knowing hardly any technical skill, and I feel like I came out not only with the basic and advanced knowledge, but with more confidence. The classes are small and Joanna is an excellent teacher. I was drawn to this class from the wide range of makeup looks and techniques practiced, such as basic eye looks, how to creat different foundation looks and period makeup looks and I was not disappointed! The perfect short course for all the basic knowledge and advanced! Such fun!

I would also recommend adding on Vic’s hairstyling course if you’re interesting in adding another advantage to your skill set. I had zero experience with hair and and Vic just instills so much confidence and positivity into the class, as does Joanna! The classes are so engaging it was such a fun and amazing experience.

I completed the fundamental pro makeup course, and it was so much more than I could have expected. Not only is Joanna an amazing makeup artist, with a wealth of experience in bridal and high fashion makeup, she is also an incredible teacher. Joanna focuses on the skills required to be an actual makeup artist (creating colours, adapting makeup for different faces and eye shapes, knowing what different products do and when to use them), rather than just giving you one look to replicate on every client.
