Why lipstick looks different on you compared to others

Ever wonder why a lipstick color that is described one way, when you apply it to yourself – can occasionally be not what you expected? This is because the way the colour behaves is determined predominantly by three things:

1) Your actual natural lip colour itself without any product on it (some girls have pale lips naturally, others have quite red/pink lips naturally)

2) Secondly by your skin tone (ie: dark/tanned skin as opposed to paler skin). The darker your skin tone, the lighter the lip colour generally will appear. As for the natural lip colour – it really can be trial and error – actually apply the lipstick and see whether you’re happy with how it looks.

3) Thirdly – how the colour translates on a screen depends on the screen you are viewing it on and even the angle you have the screen on when looking at it!

These photos here are of the best selling lipstick and liner by @ctilburymakeup – called ‘Pillow Talk’ – swipe to see the difference that skin tone makes to how the colour looks (gorgeous on each of them).
I love how Charlotte Tilbury actually has colour swatches on different skin colours to visually demonstrate generally what to expect. If you’re looking at buying other lipsticks – google the product on the skin tone that is in line with yours to get a much better idea, particularly if you’re not wanting to go in store to sample it first.
