When I first started out in the industry, it was publications like Vogue and Harpers Bazaar I would look to for inspiration and to see how the artists that were working on the most expensive (and stunning) faces were applying makeup. Here I could see how high the bar was set. It alarms me somewhat to see that so many young women, and relatively new makeup artists take their guidance from predominantly men making up as women – as unbelievably talented as these men are, for makeup artists wanting to reach high levels of the industry, it is just about professional suicide to not understand this difference and what constitutes truly amazing work. Many great fashion photographers will simply refuse to work with makeup artists sporting portfolios full of heavily made up, very shimmery skin; over defined, blocky eyebrows and ridiculously long, obviously fake lashes.
